Primary Instructor: Tony Cowden

Required training prerequisites: None

Our Long Range Hunter Course is 3.5 Day precision rifle course for hunters. It provides all the long range precision rifle skills needed to extend your ethical shooting range as well as the field craft required to get closer to your intended harvest. Whether you are planning a private ranch hunt or 10 day trip into the backcountry, this course will help you make that once in a lifetime shot and put meat in the freezer.

We will cover and complete practical exercises in:
– Observation / Glassing
– Land Navigation
– Stalking
– Backcountry Gear Considerations
– Using a Laser Range Finder
– Field Dressing / Pack Out
– Long Range Marksmanship (prone, tripod, alt. positions)
– Ballistics / Employing the Kestrel Solver and/or integrated solvers in LRFs
– Reading and making wind calls
– Working as a team: communication, spotting, and corrections

We have student gun and gear available for this course. This option allows for the complete beginner to gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions when they purchase their gun and equipment. Contact us to reserve your gun and gear. Gun is $100.
Gear (Kestrel, bag, etc.) is no cost.
*Student can source their ammo (6.5 creedmoor or .308) or we can upon request.

Gun & Gear Requirements for the course:
– Watch our YouTube series: Intro to Long Range and Precision Rifle Set Up.
– Rifle capable of sub 0.3 Mrad or sub-MOA (less than 1″ group at 100m) accuracy.
Please arrive with your rifle with all screws torqued and thread locked, and it zeroed at 100 meters if possible. We will cover gaining a proper zero, verify zero, and make adjustments, but having all students arrive with a close zero saves time.
– First focal plane optic of at least 12x magnification with a long range Mrad* or MOA “Christmas tree” style reticle (example: Leupold PR2). Mrad is the industry standard. If purchasing your first optic, choose Mrad over MOA! Despite what many still say, MOA is not easier than MRad and MRad provides us many tools MOA does not.
– Anti-cant level. Flatline Ops Halo-X is our favorite, but all of the FLO levels are great.
– Bipod with swivel capability: MDT sets the industry standard with their Ckye Pod bipods, but they are pricey. The Harris S series a cost effective solution. 9-13 inch tall, or similar height are best. Please do not purchase or come to the course with a Magpul bipod or other cheap plastic pod; they are junk.
– 160 rounds of the same MATCH ammunition (same brand, same bullet, same load).
No mix and match ammo! Having consistent performing ammunition is how we predict trajectories (Ex: A 200gr round fired at 2850fps may have an elevation hold of 4.5 mRads at 600m. A 180gr round fired at 2900fps may have an elevation hold of 5.1mRads. The difference of 0.6mRads at 600m is 15″ and a miss of the vitals of most big game animals.) Our recommended factory ammo is Defender Ammunition, Hornady ELD-X, Hornady ELD-M, and Federal Premium Match.
– Kestrel 5700 (or 5700 Elite) with Applied Ballistics
– Rear bag (highly recommend is the Armageddon Gear Game Changer line of bags)
–  Tripod with mounting for your rifle (Arca is HIGHLY recommended). We use and recommend Two Vets Tripods Recon Inverted and No Name Inverted Tripods.
– Laser Range Finder capable of ranging nonreflective objects (trees, etc) to 1000m. We recommend LRF binos over monos for the observation / glassing capabilities.
– Bino Harness: It is hard to beat Eberlestock’s Recon
– Backpapck: “3 day” or ~ 2,000 cu in is plenty large enough for this class.
– Shooting mat. (Midway USA and Cabelas/Bass Pro have really good mats for $50 and under).
– Tool kit with bits and heads for all the screws on your rifle, chassis/stock, optic and tripod.
– Food and drinks for the day.
– Appropriate clothing for the weather forecast.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS about your gear or what gear to purchase, please contact us. LR is an inherently expensive endeavor, so getting the right gear the first time is worthwhile.
